The unethical working conditions which employees working in factories manufacturing smart phones are subject to have been pretty widely reported now. Foxconn, who manufacture the iphone and other smart phones, have been involved in many controversies over the years relating to poor working conditions, including having to install suicide nets due to the number of employees throwing themselves from the top of the building.

Fairphone now provide an option which means you don't have to compromise your ethical values in order to own a smart phone. The manufacturing of this device is concerned at every step in the chain with providing safe working conditions and fair wages, right down to the point of sourcing only conflict-free minerals for the components.

Although I've never seen one for real, the specs look pretty good with a decent processor, 16gb internal storage and Android Jelly Bean OS.

When my current phone gives up the ghost I'll certainly be looking at one of these as a possible replacement.
